Beach House Wilderness Backpackers has four kinds of room: ocean-view dorm beds, private rooms with shared bathrooms, private en-suite rooms and garden tents. All of them are on the same hillside property about 100 metres from Wilderness Beach, and all of them include free Wi-Fi, linen and access to the communal kitchen and the bar. Rates below are per night in South African rand.

Rooms and rates

These are the entry rates for each room type. Rates move with the season and rise over the December festive period, so the live availability calendar is always the authority. Book direct and you deal with us rather than an agent.

Dorm beds

Two mixed dorms sit in the main A-frame house, one upstairs and one downstairs, with 13 and 14 beds. Both open onto sea-view decks. Lockers and linen are included, bathrooms are shared, and you have the run of the communal kitchen. This is the sociable option and it is the one that fills first over the festive season. See the dorms.

Private rooms with a shared bathroom

Two rooms in the main house give you your own door without the en-suite. The Family Room sleeps up to four and the Double Room takes two, both with mountain and garden views and shared bathrooms at the bottom of the stairs. See the private rooms.

En-suite rooms

Four rooms have their own bathroom. The Front Room and Back Room sit in a separate building behind the bar, which is the quieter end of the property, and the Front Room has a balcony with an ocean view. Twin Ensuite Rooms 1 and 2 are inside the main house. See the en-suite rooms.

Garden tents

Five tents sit among indigenous plants in the garden, each with real wooden-frame single beds and fresh linen rather than a mat on the ground. Ocean and garden views, shared bathrooms, and the sound of the surf at night. Best in the warm months. See the tents.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a dorm bed at Beach House Wilderness?

Dorm beds start at R380 per bed per night in the quieter months and rise over the December festive season. That includes linen, a locker, free Wi-Fi and use of the communal kitchen. Both dorms are in the main A-frame house with sea-view decks. Rates change with the season, so check live availability for the dates you want rather than relying on a figure quoted elsewhere.

Do any rooms have a private bathroom?

Yes. Four rooms are en-suite, starting from R1,200 per night. The Front Room and Back Room are in a separate building behind the bar, and Twin Ensuite Rooms 1 and 2 are in the main house. The Front Room has a balcony with an ocean view. Everything else on the property, including the dorms, tents and the two private rooms, uses shared bathrooms.

Is Beach House suitable for families?

Yes, within reason. The Family Room sleeps up to four with a shared bathroom, and the Back Room takes up to four with its own en-suite. Children of two to twelve pay the sharing rate and infants under two stay free. It is a backpackers rather than a family resort, so expect a social bar downstairs and live music on Sunday afternoons.

How far is Beach House from the beach?

About 100 metres, or a two minute walk down the hill to the sand at Wilderness Beach. The property sits on the hillside above the bay, which is why the dorms and several rooms have sea views. Wilderness village is a short walk in the other direction, and George is roughly 15 km west on the N2.

Can I book a room and eat at the bar?

Yes, and most guests do. Beach House Bar and Kitchen is on the same property, so there is a wood-fired pizza oven, a full bar and live music without needing to get back in a car. You can see the full menu with prices before you arrive.
